The provision of health and prevention services to sickle cell disease sufferers in Greece, in terms of their regular monitoring, is done by the Mediterranean Anemia and Sickle Cell Disease Units that exist in specific public hospitals and amount to approximately 37 in number across the territory , of which 8 are located in Attica.
They only operate in the morning hours and usually by appointment.
The Units usually belong to/are part of a pathology, hematology, or pediatric clinic of the respective Hospital and are staffed by a hematologist and/or a pathologist. Also, in the country’s pediatric hospitals that have a Juvenile Unit, there are also pediatricians.
As already mentioned, the regular monitoring of patients in the units is done by a hematologist and/or a pathologist.
